In an increasingly globalized world, the role of professional interpreters has taken on more and more relevance. But, as simple as it may sound, the truth is that this performance is a dynamic and versatile art. Read on and learn all about the types of professional interpretation that exist and their main characteristics.

Most common types of interpretation

Although there are multiple types of interpretation, today we will tell you which are the most relevant worldwide.

Simultaneous interpreting

As its name suggests, simultaneous interpretation is the act in which the interpreter translates in real-time and quickly what the speaker is saying. It is one of the best-known and most used types in the world, as it is the most effective practice for translating television broadcasts, events, or corporate conferences.

Consecutive interpretation

In this opportunity, professional interpreters do a simultaneous translation but in content blocks. They do not change word for word but translate the ideas as exactly and coherently as possible.

Bilateral interpreting

Two-way or liaison interpreting is the perfect method for tighter work environments. For example, it is useful in work meetings, educational spaces, or interviews.

We could say that this interpretation is perhaps one of the most traditional, but also one of the least used.

Sworn interpretation

There, professional interpreters translate in an official and legal environment. In both cases, institutions must authorize interpreters in charge of each country in particular.

Professional interpreters must make a completely faithful translation, due to the sensitivity of the information they handle.

Relay interpretation

This is the type of interpretation that is done at multilingual events. Generally, in this case, a central language is chosen and the team of professionals is coordinated to run the entire event simultaneously.

Interpretation by sight translation

In this case, the interpreters must do the oral translation of a particular text, image, or sign. It is a mix between simultaneous and consecutive translation, but it is less used than the previous ones.

As you will see, the world of interpretation is a world to explore and know.
